Matthew comes to Kaplan & Grady with a decade of experience litigating high-stakes commercial and civil rights matters. Prior to joining the firm, Matthew was a Trial Attorney with the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, where he investigated state and local prison systems and jails for civil rights violations, including related to protection from violence, failures of medical and mental health care, and due process violations. Before working at the Department of Justice, Matthew practiced at Williams & Connolly LLP, where he worked on government investigations and commercial litigation, with a focus on securities and antitrust matters. He also maintained an active pro bono practice while at the firm, focusing on criminal defense and Section 1983 litigation related to prison conditions and solitary confinement.

Matthew graduated cum laude from Northwestern University School of Law in 2012. During law school, Matthew worked as an intern with the Roderick MacArthur Justice Center, where he assisted with civil rights litigation related to wrongful imprisonment. Following law school, he clerked for the Hon. Marvin Aspen on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Hon. Norman Stahl on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
