Annie Garau Kelly comes to Kaplan & Grady after clerking for two federal judges: the Honorable Jeffrey I. Cummings on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the Honorable Doris L. Pryor on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
Annie graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law, where she served as the Executive Fellow of the Indiana Journal of Constitutional Design, a Bradley Fellow in Criminal Law and Procedure, and as an associate with the school’s federal habeas clinic. Throughout law school, Annie clerked for four public defender agencies, including the Indiana Federal Community Defenders, where she advocated for the compassionate release of individuals in federal prison under the First Step Act. As co-chairperson of a Children’s Policy and Law Initiative committee, she helped organize successful state-wide efforts to draft and advocate for legislation aimed at decriminalizing young people in Indiana.
Prior to law school, Annie worked for an international women’s non-profit and volunteered for an organization dedicated to ending the use of solitary confinement in New York prisons. She graduated with honors from Indiana University Bloomington, where she received a bachelor’s degree in journalism, international studies, and French.
